Southampton have taken to their official website to announce the signing of Feyenoord midfielder Jordy Clasie on a five-year deal.
The fee is thought to be in the region of £7m, and will allow Clasie to link back up with his former boss Ronald Koeman, who he played under for three years at Feyenoord - making his debut in Koeman's first game in charge - and admitted that the Dutchman's presence convinced him to make the move.
The 24-year-old will fill the gap that the recently departed Morgan Schneiderlin left, and the Saints will hope that they can continue last season's habit of replacing departed players with cheaper but no-less effective alternatives.
In the statement, Clasie is quoted as saying: “It feels good to be joining Southampton. It’s a nice club, and I’m happy to be here.
“It’s a big club playing in what I think is the biggest and most important league. Ronald being here is a big thing for me and that was important in me coming here, but even if he wasn’t here, I’d have come to this club.
“I played every game for him. He’s a good trainer and a good man so I like him, but I came here not only for him. I came here for the club.
“I’ve watched many games of Southampton, and it’s felt good when I’ve watched these games.“I hope that I have many good moments and good years here.”
The club's executive director of football Les Reed said: “Jordy is one of the most highly sought-after midfielders in Europe.
